An anti-backfire valve (Anti-BFV) is a component used in air injection reaction systems, primarily in automotive exhaust emission control systems. Its main function is to prevent backfiring, which can occur during sudden deceleration, by managing the flow of air from the air pump. Here are the key aspects of an anti-backfire valve:

  1. Purpose: The valve is designed to divert or block the flow of fresh air from the air pump into the exhaust system during periods of sudden deceleration or engine braking.
  2. Backfire Prevention: Backfiring can occur when unburned fuel (gasoline) mixes with fresh air in the exhaust system. This mixture, if ignited, can cause loud popping noises or even damage to the exhaust system. The anti-backfire valve prevents this by interrupting the supply of fresh air to the exhaust ports.
  3. Operation: During normal engine operation, the air injection system pumps fresh air into the exhaust system to facilitate the burning of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and reduce emissions. However, during deceleration, especially when the throttle is closed suddenly, the air flow from the pump can cause backfiring if it mixes with unburned fuel in the exhaust gases. The anti-backfire valve closes or redirects the air flow to prevent this from happening.
  4. Design and Location: Anti-backfire valves are typically located at strategic points in the air injection system, close to the exhaust manifold or near the exhaust ports. They may be designed as mechanical valves or controlled electronically, depending on the specific engine and emission control system design.
