A banked boiler, also known as a banked fire, refers to a boiler furnace where the combustion rate is intentionally reduced to a very low level by covering the fire with slack or fine coal, or by banking up the fire with additional fuel. This practice is typically done when there is a temporary cessation in the demand for steam. By reducing the combustion rate, the boiler can maintain a lower level of heat output until it is needed again, helping to conserve fuel and maintain a stable operating temperature.
