Cab-Over-Engine (COE)
A truck or tractor design characterized by the placement of the cab directly above the engine and front axle on the chassis. This configuration eliminates the extended hood found in conventional designs, resulting in a compact and flat-faced appearance. The windshield is positioned immediately above the front bumper, giving the driver a forward-facing view with minimal overhang. The driver’s seating position is directly above the steering axle, which enhances visibility but can contribute to a rougher ride due to proximity to road vibrations. COE trucks are valued for their short wheelbase, which improves maneuverability in confined spaces and complies with stringent vehicle length restrictions in regions like Europe and Asia. Despite their advantages, COE designs are less common in North America, where long-nose conventional trucks are preferred for their comfort and smoother ride characteristics. Alternate terms for COE trucks include “flat-faced” and “butt-nosed.”
