Jim Read Racing is heading west this week for the annual Top Fuel Championships being held at the Perth Motorplex over the December 5 and 6 weekend.

With Phil Read and Martin Stamatis both starting their seasons well qualifying 1st and 2nd recently in Queensland, and for Stamatis also making the finals there too and Read the semis, the JRR team are pumped to make improvements on their personal best times of 4.56 seconds for Read, and 4.57 seconds for Stamatis, and hopeful of even resetting the national top fuel record along the way too. What is more important though is the chase for the national title. With Stamatis currently sitting in 2nd position, Read is closely behind in 3rd place, and with hopes of top qualifying again in Perth, national records in their sights, and also the battle to chase the Australian national Top Fuel Championship, it is sure to be a gloves off affair when the teams blast the Perth Motorplex.

This round is also very special and significant to local hero Stamatis who lives in Perth, and wants nothing more than to get in the finals and win in front of his home crowd. After coming runner-up last season in the national points chase and now well familiarized and used to driving his 8000 horsepowered dragster, having won several meetings, qualified well at all events, and also running personal best times now at nearly every meeting, Stamatis will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with in Perth. Rob Cavagnino who tunes the Stamatis dragster is also renowned for not holding back when it comes to making sure everything is all running well, fast and quick too, so it should be one awesome weekend of nitro racing in WA come Friday and Saturday, that’s for sure.

Read will also have his hands full this weekend thanks to his brother, Bruce Read who does his tuning duties. Having reset the National Record recently at Willowbank Raceway in Queensland to 4.56 seconds, the car has proved to be one super quick machine with some early shut-off incremental times recently proving that 1/4 mile elapsed times even quicker than his PB are not too far away at all. Read is also the driving force supporting the cause to raise awareness and funds for men’s depression and prostate cancer as well for Movember this year, and with all of the crew now having grown their “mo’s”, the Perth round is also where the JRR crew will be shaving off their moustaches too!
